Year 2008#

In December 2008, a small group of the Island School community visited Baiwan. They taught in various schools and visited a local village. The group sponsored 40 students in Baiwan Secondary School to stay in the hostel. They brought Barbie dolls for Y8 and Y9 girls, and stationery sets for other students in the school. The group also paid for the overtime subsidies of teachers in Hao Qiang Primary School, who help with the daily maintenance.

In October 2008, 36 Island School teachers and students visited Baiwan. They taught in various schools, visited some local villages and had basketball matches with Baiwan Secondary School and Nan An Primary School. They paid for the new doors and iron window bars of the student dormitory in Bei An Primary School. They sponsored the maintenance cost for Hao Qiang Primary School. The group named two twins in a remote village and sponsored them to start school next September. They bought 16 bunk beds for the dormitory in Baiwan Secondary School and sponsored two children to register with the government. They brought wooly scarves, hats and folders for P2 and P3 students in Bei An Primary School, and P6 students in Nan An Primary School. They brought some Barbie dolls for Y8 girls in Baiwan Secondary School as well.

In June 2008, a small party of the Island School community visited Baiwan. They visited local villages and gave some shoes to local children. They visited the student hostel of Baiwan Secondary School. They set up a scholarship in Baiwan Secondary School for a student to further education in senior high school in Qingyuan. They also sponsored some graduates in Fengxia Middle School to go to university.

In March 2008, two thousand pairs of shoes were donated to Baiwan. With the help of local school teachers, Island School teachers and volunteers helped to distribute two-third of these shoes to primary students. The rest of the shoes will be distributed to young children in the villages during the next visit in June.
